Transmission Poles

Transmission Poles

Transmission poles are used for the Over head Power distribution network of Low & Medium voltage lines. The main purpose of using it is to support the electrical current cables. Shape: The height of transmission Poles usually varies from 9 to 15 m with exception up to 20 m for road or wadi (valley) crossing. The shaft is of octagonal cross sectional shape with dimensions complying with the design structural analysis, international standards requirements, and as per customer requirements and specification. Poles with heights up to 14 meters are made from one shaft segment. Poles higher than 14m height are made from two segments with minimum overlap length of 1.5 times the diameter of bottom of the upper segment. Shafts are made from steel sheets folded to the required shape and welded longitudinally by automatic arc welding machine. Most of the poles are attached with a bearing plate having square or octagonal shape at its bottom end. The bearing plate is part of the embedment of the pole in concrete. Some of the transmission poles are fixed with base plates having slotted holes suitable for anchor bolts. Dimensions of the base plate given on drawings are complying with design analysis. Base plate is welded to the bottom of the shaft by double fillet weld, according to International standards. Anchor bolts to fix the base plate to concrete foundation are supplied with the required nuts and washers and having the size and dimension as per the structural analysis. An Earthing nut is welded outside the shaft at the suitable level and equipped with the required bolts, nuts and washers for earthing. Transmission poles usually have accessories like cross arm, bracing etc to support cables and guy wires to keep it in position. Straightness, tolerances and plumbness of the pole are maintained within permissible limits according to international standards. Design: Design of poles is performed utilizing Computer software to analyse the pole shaft, cross arm, (base plate & anchor bolts - if applicable). Poles are designed according to international codes (ASCE Manual no.72) and as per the customer specification using international SPOLE software. Material: Material used to fabricate the pole components will be in accordance of international standards and as per the project specifications. Finishing: Shaft, Base plate, Arm Bracket and other accessories are hot dip galvanised according to BS EN 1461 and its recent revisions, the minimum average coating thickness is according to BS EN 1461, or as per the customer requirements, but not more than 120 microns in any case. No welding, cutting or drilling is done after galvanising. The anchor bolts including nuts and washers are hot dip galvanised according to ASTM A 153.
